THE SEATTLE RAINFOREST ACTION GROUP
SEARAG
Weyerhaeuser; the planets largest timber harvesting and lumber production corporation, not only
holds the title for largest logging corporation, but also for worst environmental offender in North
America. Wiping out ancient lands, indigenous territories, old growth forests and endangered
species habitats, Weyerhaeuser rapes our land of its beauty, leaving either mono-culture tree
farms or barren wastelands to be deserted or transformed into oversized housing developments.
All in the name of perpetual profit, the Weyerhaeuser Corporation has no regard for anything that
stands in the way of their annual revenue.
Continuing to clearcut their way across the
continent, Weyerhaeuser leaves its mark,
with a trail of barren clearcuts, and
abandoned communities, all the while
emphasizing a facade to investors and
consumers of sustainability and ethics, that
in all aspects are nothing more then a
fictitious scheme of lies to cover the truth.
With access to more then six million acres
in the United States alone, Weyerhaeuser
is also granted rights to log and destroy
more then seventy thousand acres a year
of U.S. National Forests. In Canada, the
Monopolistic corporate giant has been given access to log more then 32 million acres of public
lands, regardless of public input. In South America, Weyerhaeuser controls and devastates
hundreds of thousands of acres of endangered forests creating ecologically barren, monocultured
tree farms, all the while currently looking into introducing altered and genetically manipulated
(GE/GM) trees into the ecosystem. If that isn't bad enough, In Asia, Weyerhaeuser purchases lumber
from critically endangered tropical rainforests from all throughout the southeastern regions of Asia,
while boasting a well documented reputation of promoting corruption and illegal logging operations
throughout the region. Globally, Weyerhaeuser has a major impact on our last remaining
endangered forests, and left unchallenged they will continue to log, blinded by greed until there is
nothing left.

Weyerhaeuser
Logging old growth forests – and distributing and selling old growth forest products – is a barbaric, outdated practice that has surceased in the American marketplace. More than four hundred global companies have already dissociated themselves from endangered and old growth forest destruction, including American forest products company Boise Cascade Corporation. Despite this, Weyerhaeuser remains the #1 logger of old growth forests in North America. Unlike other leading businesses, Weyerhaeuser has failed to acknowledge the evolving demands of consumers and refuses to respond to the global deforestation crisis.

Along with old growth forests, Weyerhaeuser has a knack for destroying public lands. According to
the U.S. Forest Service, from the period 1991 to 2000, Weyerhaeuser was the fourth largest
purchaser of timber from federal lands. During the same time, the company was also
the #1 buyer of timber sales in the Southeast and the #1 buyer of timber sales in the Deschutes
National Forest in Oregon. Weyerhaeuser has also been accused of illegal logging the country’s
national forests for the past decade. The Timber Theft Task Force, formed in 1991 to investigate
tree stealing on federal lands, compiled evidence that Weyerhaeuser stole more than 88,000 trees
valued at more than $5 million from the Winema National Forest in Southern Oregon.
Despite its “tree growing” mantra, Weyerhaeuser’
s system of converting native forests into
industrial tree plantations turns biologically
diverse regions into toxic, ecologically-starved
tree farms. After the native forest is cut, the land
is bulldozed and burned to eliminate all native
fauna, including trees, shrubs, vines, fungi,
grasses and wildflowers. Hybridized,genetically
identical trees are then planted in evenly spaced
rows. Any native vegetation that returns is cut or
sprayed with herbicides and the plantation is
regularly sprayed with pesticides to limit insect
infestations. The company then applies chemical
fertilizers to encourage faster tree growth.
As if monocultured tree farms and catastrophic logging practices aren't enough, Weyerhaeuser is
fooling around with genes as well. Weyerhaeuser is affiliated with the Tree Genetic Engineering
Research Cooperative (TGERC) and the Plant Molecular Genetics Cooperative (PMGC). Both
associations heavily fund and support genetically engineered tree research. Without a clear
understanding of the consequences that genetic engineering may pose to these symbiotic
relationships, any large-scale use of GE trees poses serious potential hazards to the environment,
biodiversity and human health.
If Weyerhaeuser is truly interested in sustainably managed forests,it should certify its operations
under with the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), a not-for profit organization formed by
environmental, social and economic interests to support and certify "environmentally appropriate,
socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world's forests." Instead,
Weyerhaeuser uses depends on certification from the industry- backed “Sustainable Forestry
Initiative” (SFI) – a program developed in 1994 by the American Forest & Paper Association, the
largest association of loggers in the world. The SFI represents the “Same Old-Forest Industry” – it
is a new green coat of paint over the same tired practices of companies like Weyerhaeuser. Its
because of acts and practices like these that we work to stop Weyerhaeuser's destruction and
influence sustainable practices. If you would like to get involved in this campaign, or contact us
